From Mrs. Flores, our School Nurse Teacher
There have been several reported cases of the flu over the past few weeks at Sowams School.
Influenza illness can include any or all of these symptoms: fever, muscle aches, headache, lack of energy, dry cough, sore throat, and possibly runny nose. The fever and body aches can last 3-5 days and the cough and lack of energy may last for 2 or more weeks. The Department of Health defines a fever as 100.4ºF/38ºC for people with influenza-like illness.
If you suspect your child has the flu, avoid being in social situations, including school, and contact your child’s pediatrician. If your child has had the flu, before returning to school, please be sure he/she has been fever free without fever reducing medications for 24 hours, and the cough has improved as well as his/her energy level so they are able to fully participate in the busy school day. If you are not sure, contact the school nurse for guidance.
This will help keep the spread of illness to a minimum, with less loss of school time for everyone. Keep washing those hands, covering coughs using the elbow (wing), and avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth to prevent spreading germs!
