Upcoming Events
Book Fair: The Arctic Adventure Book Fair is just a couple weeks away (week of November 11, 2019)! Please click on the link to visit the book fair home page where you can sign up for one of the many volunteer opportunities as well as set up your child's e-wallet account--the easiest way to provide funds for them to shop! Be on the lookout for flyers being sent home with your children next week and more info about family night on November 14th. https://www.scholastic.com/bf/sowams. Information about class visits to the book fair will also be sent home.
Parent Classroom Visits: Each year in November, we invite parents to join their children at school to see and participate in a classroom lesson. Dates and times have been set for each grade level and you may find the time here. Please remember: this is a time for you to spend time with your child; other siblings should not be joining you.
Town Meeting: Our next Town Meeting is November 5 at 1:40, Class of the week is Mrs. Carey’s.
Other Bits of Information
Thanksgiving Food Drive: Each year, our school helps those less fortunate. One way we do this is our annual food drive for Thanksgiving to benefit Barrington’s Tap In. We are now in the process of collecting various food items. Each grade level has been assigned certain foods. The list may be found here. Food items may be sent into school and placed in the boxes in the school’s foyer. We will collect food until November 14, 2019.
School Hours: School begins at 7:55 each day. Please make sure your child is in the building by that time otherwise your child is marked tardy. Our morning community meeting begins at 7:50 in the multipurpose room. It would be great for all students to be here for this meeting.
Emergency Contacts: All families have people who may pick up their children in the event of an emergency. In cases like this, the school will usually contact this person. The people on your emergency contact form can NOT pick up your child when they want to do so nor change the way your child goes home each day.
PTO Extended Day Program: The PTO is looking for a volunteer to run the Extended Day program. The position requires someone to organize the classes (including finding teachers), set up class lists and google forms for emergency contacts, do the teacher contracts, facilitate payments with the PTO Treasurer, and set up volunteers for each class day. It is best if the chair is available to be there on the class days (or have a committee to do this). The program runs two days per week typically mid-February to mid-April. You may contact Kristin Brown at brownkristin33@gmail.com with questions or to volunteer.
School Phone Numbers: Our school has two phone numbers: 401.247.3180 and 401.247.3179. When we call parents, either number may show up on your caller ID. I know I tend not to answer calls when I don’t recognize the number. Please make sure you have both numbers in your phone so when we call, you will know who is calling.
Pictures at School: Parents are invited to Sowams School a lot. Please remember: If you are taking pictures of your child, do not have other students in the picture with your child. We have students who are not able to have their pictures taken and whose pictures cannot be on social media. You do not know who those children are; so, it is best not to take pictures of other children.
Lunch Information: The November hot lunch menu may be found here. Also, it is never too late to apply for free/reduced lunch. Information about this may be found here.
