Backpack Express

Good morning,

There’s a lot happening at Sowams so make sure you read today’s Backpack Express:

  • Faculty/Staff Appreciation Week: The week of May 4, 2026, we will be celebrating Faculty and Staff Appreciation Week. The PTO has various ways scheduled to celebrate our wonderful faculty and staff. Your help is needed with this. Please see this information and this information on what will be happening that week and how you are able to celebrate our caring faculty and staff.

  • Sweetheart Dance:  It’s almost time!  Get ready to dance, play and smile at our Sweetheart Dance - Friday May 8th from 5:30-7:30 at Barrington Middle School. (See flyer for details.)

  • Play Tickets:  Our second and third graders are performing this weekend.  Tickets are on sale for the two performances on May 2, 2026.  Information to purchase tickets may be found here.

  • Third Grade Parents:  Each year, the principal at Hampden Meadows School invites third grade parents to an orientation meeting where you will find out a lot of information about HMS.  This meeting is taking place on May 5, 2026, at 6:00.  Information about this event may be found here.

  • Hampden Meadows Tough Tiger:  The always fun Tough Tiger is taking place on May 17, 2026,  This is a fun, family event that takes place each year.  More information about this, including how to sign up, may be found here.

  • May Hot Lunch:  The May hot lunch menu may be found here.

  • PTO Meeting:  The next PTO meeting will take place on Monday, May 4, 2026, at 7:00 PM.  The meeting will be virtual.  A link will be sent out on Monday for the meeting.

  • A Day Without Hate:  Our district will be recognizing A Day Without Hate on Friday, May 1, 2026.  This is a day we come together to say we will not tolerate violence or hate but rather show kindness to everyone.  The Barrington High School’s Chain Reaction Club is hosting a peace poster making party on Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 5:00 - 7:00 at the high school.  White could be worn on Friday as a symbol of showing kindness to each other.

  • Field Trips:  Some grades have upcoming field trips.  As a reminder, if you are asked to chaperone a field trip, you need to have a background check on file with the district.  If there is not one, you will not be allowed to attend the field trip.  Background checks may be done at the Attorney General’s office in Cranston and at the Barrington Police Department (which may require an appointment).

  • Community Notices:  There are a couple community notices for you:  Barrington Land Conservation Trust and Creative Wanderings.

Have a wonderful day.

Best,

Jim Callahan

Principal
