Backpack Express

Good afternoon,

I hope you have been enjoying your day.  Here is this week’s Backpack Express.

  • Sick Children:  If your child is sick, please do not send them to school.  We are seeing an uptick in Covid cases (seven cases so far this week).  If your child is sick, you should have them tested at a test site.  If you test your child at home and get a positive result, please take a picture of the results and share with Mrs. Flores (floresd@barringtonschools.org).  If you have questions about whether or not to send your child to school, please reach out to Mrs. Flores.  She is very busy first thing in the morning so please be patient until she is able to return your phone call or email.
  • Book Fair:  Our Book Fair is next week.  I will send a separate email with book fair information, which will include the day and time your child’s class will visit the book fair.
  • Grade 3 Family Book Club:  Mrs. Greene, our librarian, will be hosting a family book club on June 14, 2022.  The book that should be read is How to Win a Slime War. Information about the book club, including how to sign up to participate and how you may be able to receive a copy of the book for free, may be found here.
  • Hampden Meadows School Tough Tiger, Part 1:  HMS’ biggest fundraiser of the year is coming up on May 22, 2022.  It’s the Tough Tiger race.  Prior to Covid, this was a fun family day and everyone is looking forward to its return.  Information on how to participate may be found here.
  • Hampden Meadows School Tough Tiger, Part 2:  The HMS Tough Tiger is in your own backyard (literally)!  On Sunday, May 22nd the Tough Tiger race will leave HMS, go down Old Chimney Rd, head toward the back path of Sowams, complete obstacles at Sowams School and continue back to HMS for the finish line.  If you/your family would like to help out and share in the fun, we could use your help in the Sowams community!  There are multiple obstacles along the way and at Sowams that require volunteer support for instruction.  Please consider signing up for a volunteer slot on this SignUp Genius.  If you are interested in helping and want to be placed at a specific location (near your house, Sowams School, etc.), please reach out to Anna at annaehurley@gmail.com to be placed where you'd like to be.
  • POW/MIA Flag:  The Barrington Public Schools have been given POW/MIA flags from the Barrington Veteran's Council.  These flags will be flown at our schools on various occasions throughout the year.  We will be sharing some age-appropriate information about the flag and its meaning in case they notice it flying.
  • Parent and 3rd Grade Surveys:  At the start of the year, Barrington Public Schools asked parents to complete a survey about our schools, Sowams in this case.  As a follow up, we are again asking parents to complete the survey.  To access the parent survey, click here.  You may take the survey for each school where you have a child.  We are also going to once again give the survey to our third grade students.  For the list of topics for the parent and student surveys, please click here.
  • Community Notice:  On May 14th the Postal Carriers will hold their 30th “Stamp Out Hunger “ Food Drive in Barrington to benefit the food pantry at Tap In.  Residents are asked to place unexpired nonperishable food items next to their mailboxes on Saturday, May 14th.  The Postal Carriers will collect the food while they deliver the mail.

Have a wonderful evening.

Best,

Jim Callahan
